Gaining huge popularity since it was brought out into the public in 2010, Pinterest has garnered quite a following. This latest emerging favorite has now become the third largest social networking site, nudging Google+ and YouTube out of the top three rankings. Built on the principle that dedicates on helping customers keep track of their favorite images, Pinterest can be used to market your business. But before you try launching a Pinterest page for your campaign, here are some pieces of advice:

1. Is your business fit for Pinterest?

Pinterest is dominated by food pictures, recipes, home décor items, accessories and other similar products. If you, by any chance, own a business that offers document management services, then this social media site is not for you. If you’re a restaurateur with delicious-looking images with fine resolutions, several pinners will follow you and repin your images all over again.

2. Launch Pinterest awareness campaigns.

Put up large signs regarding your new Pinterest account in your store or retail space. Loyal customers with their own Pinterest accounts will follow yours and create a series of followers. Organize contests and giveaways to further popularize your account. Be sure, though, to follow the site’s established rules on contests.

3. Post only the most beautiful pictures you have.

The most common feature of Pinterest accounts with the largest number of followers is the quality of their photos and the way they’re splashed and presented on the page. Ensure that you pin the highest-quality images with sharp colors and resolution. You can also optimize the categories on your Pinterest account with popular keywords with low competition.

4. Connect with some big-time Pinteresters.

Follow people with high numbers of followers in Pinterest. If you post catchy content with aesthetically pleasing pictures, you might be followed back by these popular Pinterest people. Once this happens, their own followers may check out your site and follow you, too.

5. Post pictures other than your own products.

Pinterest keeps strict surveillance of accounts that hypes itself with blatant self-promotion practices. To avoid being part of the watch list, post other things you find interesting enough to share with your own followers. Doing this would also endear you to other users who might follow your account for more updates.

Pinterest is such a fun site to post not just your personal hobbies, but also your business endeavors. Finagle an invite from someone you know who has a Pinterest account and explore your options. Indulge in your creative side, and voila! You’ll soon have enough followers, which can sustain your own business.
