Who are You when You Write?

The Importance of Voice in Writing

When we write, it is essential to establish a clear voice that will make our content compelling to read. Content becomes boring and tiresome to read when we don’t make the opening sentence catchy enough. An introduction that starts with a nondescript scene can make readers nod off and look for more interesting content. How do you make your business copy convincing enough to capture attention and engage reaction from readers?

A business copy should be phrased in the second voice, which requires a conversational way of writing. This connects more to the audience because you use words such as ‘you’ and ‘we.’ The first-person point of view can detract from your purpose because it uses ‘I,’ which can make a reader feel disconnected. The third person further alienates, as this voice is used more for formal writing and speeches that require deep thought.

Avoid using jargon in your copy. Overuse of technical words when you’re not speaking to a bunch of experts will turn off your audience. They will get confused about what you’re trying to convey. Jargon also makes writers sound arrogant and too full of themselves. It’s better to minimize the use of jargon or explain it in a short and simple sentence to help readers understand its meaning.

Make your copy short and sweet. Anything longer than 150 words can turn attention away from your words. Trim down unnecessary wordings when you can use just one. For example, why say ‘make use of’ when you can write ‘use’? This makes it important to speak your piece in a concise manner. Going beyond the 150-word limit can make your piece sound long-winded.

What should you write about when making a copy? Create content that engages the emotions of your readers. Find out what your business can provide them; how they can benefit from your products and services. Emphasize the advantages of working with you. Be careful, though, of making claims. Make sure you can deliver on everything you promise or guarantee. If you don’t manage to live up to your customers’ expectations, you will disappoint them. They definitely will not recommend you to their family and friends after a dissatisfactory experience.

Keep your contact details up to date to ensure that customers can reach you whenever they need your services. Once you get back to them and satisfy their business requirements every time they visit, they will be your customers for life.
